The Heavy Lift Group member, FOX Brazil, assigned a member from India, Total Movements, to deliver the consignment from India to Brazil. The consignment comprised 3 Washer Drums + Accessories which were to be picked up from the supplier's factory in Pune.

Cargo Details

Commodity:

3 Washer Drums & Accessories

Dimensions:

11.3 x 4.3 x 4.6 meter (LxWxH) Each

Weight:

32 MT Each

Accessories were crated & packed in wooden boxes with a maximum height limit of 3.5 meters. The above consignment required a total of 17 containers that included 40’ OT IG, 40’ OT OOG & 40’ OOG FR.

Scope of Work

  • Loading of Washer Drums & accessories factory stuffed at the supplier’s factory in Pune
  • Road transportation from supplier’s factory to Nhava Sheva Port
  • Export customs & port clearance
  • Stuffing/lashing & securing of Washer Drums at the CFS
  • Port handling
  • Ocean freight from Nhava Sheva port to Paranagua Port, Brazil

Challenges Faced

  • The cargo height was 4.6 meters. Appropriate route feasibility was done from Pune to Nhava Sheva CFS to address the height constraint throughout the route.
  • As the cargo was delicate, it was difficult to do the lashing & loading on a low-bed trailer. Hence, we used a 10-hydraulic axle modular trailer to maintain the safety of the cargo.
  • Due to cargo dimensions & criticality, none of the carriers were accepting the cargo in Flat Rack containers. After meticulous planning, multiple iterations, rigorous work & considering the safety measures, we were able to load the cargo into FR containers. This was far more cost-effective as compared to the Break Bulk shipment mode.
  • While the last shipment was in the execution stage, a sudden announcement of the lock-down due to COVID-19 led to disruptions in the port operations. However, our team stayed firm & managed to safely load the cargo onto the booked vessel without any delay & inconvenience.

Project Execution

  • The project was executed in 5 shipments based on the readiness of the cargo. It required 3 months to accomplish this project.
  • For 40’ OT IG & 40’ OT OOG, the shipment was based on factory stuffing. Our scope was to provide empties at supplier premises & return back to port. 4-8 containers per lot were shipped regularly within a short period. We critically analysed the movement to make the process seamless.
  • In the case of Washer Drums, we came across an unexpected challenge, wherein the carriers were not accepting the cargo on Flat Rack containers due to height restrictions. However, we calculated the COG (Centre of Gravity ) & managed to move the cargo on flat rack containers with appropriate lashing/securing. There were 3 pieces of washer drum with 4.6mts height each. Our scope was inclusive for placing vehicle at supplier’s works which required 10 – hydraulic axles for each piece, carting at CFS and lashing/securing on flat rack container, export custom clearance and loading on to the vessel.
  • Our designated project coordinator handled shipment across the entire operation & provided regular updates to the client. A separate documentation team managed to get all documents ready in time for custom formalities. Our in-house technical team conducted route feasibility, providing an accurate lashing and securing plan & software simulation for safe cargo delivery.
