Papua Island is a very tricky place to work. We encountered issues with barge documentation/permission formalities; this was complicated as port entry is not possible without the indent, non-availability of shore crane/floating crane to offload the barge, non-availability of berth, etc.
The most challenging part is that passenger ferries are given berthing priority at all 3 ports. It was very important for us to place the barges in the exact window and complete the operations within the stipulated time.
We had a sizeable team of expert and resources for the whole time and from Jakarta we appointed Owner’s Protective Agent (OPA) for local liasioning and coordination + personal supervision of vendor’s operations to ensure seamless delivery.
To add to this, we couldn’t work after 6 pm as there were tribals who will hunt humans, political unrest + each and every resource from smallest labour needs had to be flown in from Jakarta.
The province was a victim of terror attack which took place in Papua few days before execution. Gunmen in the remote Indonesian province of Papua have killed as many as 31 construction workers who were brought from a distant island to help build a major highway.
